Here is how it actually went down at the mic, no cleanup. Our orange would-be king gets on primetime in July and screams that 250,000 non-citizens across four states had been voting illegally. NPR reports it, and reports that DHS pointed to zero evidence. They just made the number. Then it becomes 16,000 in Nevada. Then, when Nevada says show us the receipts, it becomes 185 they'd actually vouch for, and even then they won't hand over the data behind those 185. And the punchline nobody should sleep on: the same agency that won't show its work is threatening prison for the county clerks who ask to see it.
That's the whole Byte in one breath. Now let me walk you through it, because every ugly turn is on tape or on paper, and it deserves to be seen in order.
Who actually eats this
Before I name a single person to hate, I want you looking at the right face. The harmed here are your brothers and your sisters, your aunts and uncles, your nieces and nephews. Anyone over 18 who's a citizen and can vote. These are the people who get scrubbed off a roll they belong on, less than three months before Election Day, on the strength of a number the government itself can't stand behind.
Nevada's own deputy secretary of state for elections said the quiet part out loud on the recorded call. The state doesn't want to inadvertently accuse a citizen of not being one, and then that person is terrified and disenfranchised from the process. That's the fear. That's your neighbor. Hold them there, because everything after this is how they got put in the crosshairs.
Watch the number melt
Follow the count as it shrinks in DHS's own hands.
It starts as a shout. Trump, primetime in July, tells the country his administration found more than 250,000 non-citizens on the voter rolls of Nevada and three other states. Per NPR, no evidence for illegal voting. Zero. He just made the number.
Then comes the ceiling. DHS zeroes in on Nevada and says it found close to 16,000 non-citizens on the state's list. Wipe these names, they say. Nevada asks about that number. And DHS admits on the call that 16,000 was "the ceiling," the absolute top-end guess, and that every single voter still had to be manually reviewed. So already the scary number is a maybe.
Then comes the real number. One day later, DHS hands Nevada a list of exactly 185 ID numbers. The voters it says it's actually confident about. From 250,000, to 16,000, to 185. That last one is the only number they'd put their name on.
Then comes the refusal, and this is the tell. Nevada asks the obvious thing: show us the data behind those 185. The names, the birthdates, the matches. And the USCIS side writes back that they'd prefer to just hand over the voter ID and let Nevada figure it out. Meanwhile DHS says it still has more than 14,000 Nevada voters that "need additional review." Still hanging out there. Still unproven.
Nevada put its answer in writing on August 20: they can't conduct an analysis without real verifiable information. So they're out. They won't pull a single citizen off the rolls on a spreadsheet nobody will explain. Good.
Now the actors, in their own mouths
Heather Honey. Ooh, Heather Honey. The point person running the non-citizen-voter project. Per NPR, she pushed election falsehoods before she landed this gig, which makes you wonder what exactly she was qualified for. On the call she plays it sweet: I'm an open book, we're acting in good faith, we just want to help you. And then she doesn't open the book. So fuck you. How dare you go on your nice-lady routine, work to screw people out of their vote, and then wave off a number that was wrong by a factor of a thousand like it's a typo. Oops, wrong count, let's keep purging.
Nicolas Bartell, USCIS. Told Nevada the agency was moving 40 additional staff to do nothing but comb through voter rolls. Forty people. That's your tax money. Forty federal salaries spent hunting a quarter-million ghosts, and the deliverable was 185 they'd vouch for and a wall on the evidence for even those. A government paying people to prove a falsehood that can't be proven, so it can keep the story alive.
Secretary Markwayne Mullin. The hinge of the whole thing, and a genuine piece of work. Back in July he promised DHS would keep releasing these analyses during early voting and while ballots are being counted, and then went straight to the muscle. Maximum pressure. Fines. Penalties. And, depending how far it goes, prison time. Against whom? Local election officials who don't jump when DHS says jump. He is threatening to jail people for doing their jobs with clean procedures, while his own side runs no procedures at all.
And here's the contradiction, named plain. On the same set of calls, when Nevada asked whether the feds were investigating any of their election officials, DHS said no. No criminal referrals. None. So the prison talk is a loaded gun waved in public and quietly holstered in private, aimed at people whose only crime is asking to see the evidence.
The shaky bit, flagged out loud
Honesty tenet, no laundering. NPR confirmed Pennsylvania had a similar call and, notably, never even got a short list. The line that it was clear DHS didn't have confidence in the numbers they'd stated publicly comes from an official who didn't have permission to speak publicly. So call it what it is: one anonymous voice, consistent with everything on tape, but not itself a receipt. The receipts are the recording and the emails. That's the solid 90. This is the shaky 10, and I'm telling you so to your face.
The part that grinds my teeth
Put the whole con on one table. DHS went on primetime and told 300 million people it caught a quarter-million non-citizens voting. One state said prove it, and the number melted in their hands. 250,000 to 16,000, and they cop that 16,000 was the ceiling, their most generous fantasy. Then 16,000 to 185 they'd sign. And when Nevada says fine, show us how you matched those 185 human beings to "non-citizen," DHS says nah, we'd prefer to just hand you a voter ID. An open book. Good faith. From the woman whose résumé, per NPR, includes pushing election bullshit before she got the badge to do it official.
And credit where it's due: Nevada grew a very large pair. Show me the match, they said. And when they heard we'd prefer to just give you a voter ID, they said open book my ass. Good for you, Nevada. We need more states with the spine to push back on these idiots.
But here's the thing that should make your teeth grind. This same agency, the one that won't show its work, the one whose ceiling number was off by a factor of a thousand from what it would defend, this same agency has a Cabinet secretary on the record threatening prison for the county clerk who won't purge a citizen off a spreadsheet they refuse to explain. Read that back. Maximum pressure. Fines. Penalties. Prison time. For the crime of saying I can't scrub a citizen off the rolls on numbers you won't show me.
That's not election security. That's a shakedown wearing a lanyard. You don't threaten to jail people for demanding evidence you actually have. You threaten to jail them because you don't. The threat is the tell. The whole 250,000 was a number picked to sound scary on TV, and the prison talk is there to keep anyone with real voter files from checking the receipts before Election Day, because the second they do, it collapses to 185 and a shrug.
And who eats it? Not Mullin. Not Honey. Your neighbor. Flagged by a match nobody will explain, staring down a purge, terrified and disenfranchised, because DHS needed a headline more than it needed to be right, and it's willing to threaten jail to keep anyone from noticing the difference.
DHS lies? Really? No. The lie isn't the shocking part. The shocking part is they'll threaten to cage the people who ask them to stop. Show your work or shut your mouth. You don't get to point a felony at a poll worker over a number you won't even let them see. Period. End of story.
